Integrated Arts Academy

Welcome to the Chickadee Room! My classroom is a half-day program that has a very consistent and structured schedule. The Chickadee room is a play-based classroom. We start and end with circle time, and we have a snack time/ lunchtime, but mostly the day is set up to facilitate deep play within the environment. My curriculum is founded on place-based education. Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in early literacy and math skills, social studies, science, and other concepts across the curriculum.

We generally start the year exploring the self, and move on to units of study about family, diversity, friendship and kindness, school community, and then the world at large with an elaborate Growing theme at the end of the year.  However every year I shift and change the curriculum depending on the student’s interests. I take observational assessments to find an emergent curriculum that is curated naturally through the interests of the specific children in the classroom.
